Tustin’s upcoming City Council election on November 8, 2022, will be Tustin’s first by-district election. With by-district elections, Tustin voters will vote for one Council Member that lives in their defined district to represent their district, and a Mayor to represent the city as a whole.
Since Tustin City Council Member terms alternate, not every seat on the City Council will be up for election this year. This November, the City Council will have two open seats, one for District 3 and one for an at-large Mayor. With district elections, Tustin residents in District 3 will vote to elect their Council Member, and all Tustin voters will have the opportunity to vote to elect an at-large Mayor. In 2024, the City Council seats for Districts 1, 2, and 4 will be up for election.
For residents of District 3 interested in serving as a City Council Member or residents within city limits interested in serving as an at-large Mayor, the nomination period for candidates begins July 18 and ends on August 12, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. To be eligible to run, candidates must be registered voters.
The transition from at-large elections to district based elections occurred in 2021 and culminated with the City Council selecting a final 4-district map in November 2021. During the move to districts, the City held five Public Hearings and two Community Workshops for the public and City Council to discuss the districting process and solicit feedback on potential district maps.
In addition to meetings, the City engaged the Tustin community through social media, email, phone calls, lawn signs, flyers, mailers, and video production with all outreach materials produced in English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese.
