BIOGRAPHY

PUBLIC LIFE

Council Member Rebecca "Beckie" Gomez, Ph.D. was elected to the City Council in 2020 after a two-year break from her previous service on the Council from 2010-2018. Previously, Council Member Gomez served as Mayor Pro Tem. Her priorities for the City Council are 

  • Engaging the community on public safety issues 
  • Providing safe, accessible recreational opportunities for all ages
  • Pursuing economic development opportunities 

Council Member Gomez represents the City of Tustin on the Orange County Vector Control Board, the Orange County Library Advisory Board, and the Senior Fund Board of Directors. She serves as an alternate for the Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency and the Santa Ana River Flood Protection Agency. In 2021, Council Member Gomez was selected by the City Selection Committee to serve on the Emergency Medical Care Committee. 

In 2016, Gomez was elected to the Orange County Board of Education representing District 1 and re-elected in 2020. During her tenure on OCBE, she represented the Board on the Orange County and California School Board Associations. 


PERSONAL LIFE

Gomez retired as the Dean for the Health Science Division at Cypress College in 2021, where she previously served as the college's Director for the Health Information Technology Program, Professional Development Coordinator, and a tenured faculty member. She has held various management and consulting positions in hospitals, ambulatory clinics, and a national home health agency. 

 She is a past recipient of the William J. Olsten Award for Excellence in Records Management and the Core Values Winner for "Commitment to our Shareholders" from Tokos Medical Corporation.  In 2018, Gomez received a Standing "O" from the Tustin Unified School District.  She was recognized by the Orange County Register as one of the “100 Most Influential People” of Orange County in 2020.  She has been honored by the California Health Information Association as the “Educator of the Year” in 2021 and received the Orange County School Board Association’s Marian Bergeson Award for “Outstanding School Board Member” in 2022. 

Gomez has been involved in numerous community and professional organizations. A two-time past president of the Greater Orange County Health Information Association, she has served as president of the Tustin Public Schools Foundation, the Tustin South Bobby Sox, the Tustin High School Academic Boosters, the Tustin Unified School District Coordinating Council, the Thorman Elementary School PTO and the Currie Middle School PTA. Gomez has served on the Board of Directors for the American Association of University Women, Tustin Girls Softball, Nelson PTA, Tustin Meadows Tiny Tots, and the Orange County Women's Soccer League. She has been a longtime youth coach with Tustin South Bobby Sox, Tustin Girls Softball, AYSO, and National Junior Basketball.  

Beckie and her husband, John McKeon, have made Tustin their home for over 30 years, where their children attended Orange County schools. Their two sons are California State University, Fullerton, and Sonoma State University graduates and their daughter completed her undergraduate and law degrees at Stanford University. 


EDUCATION

Along with a bachelor's degree from the UCLA School of Public Health, Gomez has master's degrees in healthcare administration and sports management. She also has a doctorate in Law and Public Policy.
